Through him, I heard about W. Edwards Deming – engineer, statistician, professor, author, lecturer, and management consultant.
Beginning in the summer of 1950, Deming began teaching methods for improving how top managers and engineers worked and learned together.
Deming then played a significant role in the dramatic turnaround of post-war Japanese industry and their rise to a world economic power. He taught them how to produce consistent quality through repeatable and improvable processes.
He would say, “If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you are doing.”
I couldn’t describe what I was doing, because I was constantly recreating the wheel, if you will. Never the same way.
And, “It’s not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, then do your best.”
I didn’t know what to do. I followed the INDUSTRY – the FMO’s, B/D’s, insurance and investment companies – and it was the path to mediocrity.
And, “A bad system will beat a good person every time.”
A system is a series of processes connected together in a way that best produces the desired outcome.
I had an epiphany: If I don’t have proven processes in my business, I don’t really have a business.
I needed processes in every area of my business.
Once I understood the power of systems and processes, one by one, I invested in an existing system.
Then, I applied Deming’s principles to relentlessly improve the underlying processes until I had an elegant, seamless system that produced predictable results.
First, credibility stacking. A book system. A media system.
Then, prospect attraction. A seminar attraction system. A direct mail attraction system.
Then, conversion. A prospect to client system.
Then, nurture. A nurture to action system.
Then, deliverables. A world class deliverables system…
You get the picture.
