In the video below, Scott Keffer explains the importance of limiting input and access. People and perspective both impact the way we act, behave, and make decisions, so it is important to limit who we let in and influence what we do and how we think.
The Importance of Limiting Input and Access
(Below is the transcript from the video.)
So how do I limit Input and Access? At the center of this is you. Here you are, moving through life, and there’s two kind of things that come in. What are they? People and Perspectives. Both of them impact the way I think, and certainly impact what I do. Who are you letting in? Who and what do you let in? It’s a good thought. Are you are thermometer, which means just allowing anybody to come in, or a thermostat? You’ve just gotta decide.
So how many have friends like that? Colleagues like that? I’m going to invest in myself. I’m going to grow personally. Have you ever done crabbing? How many have done crabbing? You know what you do, if you get one crab, and you put it in the bucket, you’ve heard this story before, right? You’ve got to put a lid on the bucket because the crab gets out. You get two, you don’t need the lid anymore. Why is that? They’ll both keep each other in the bucket. Nobody, you’ve got to decide, some people don’t want you to climb out of the bucket.
Who are those people? What page are we on? [crosstalk 00:02:11] Excuse machines. Do you know any of those? They just multiply, they manufacture excuses. How about blamers and complainers? How about drama bombs?
What’d you say Sharon when we were going back those guys were in a couple, two weeks ago or last week? It was last week. You said when we were talking about what was working well, you said one word, “Drama.” Lot of drama. Lot of drama. No grace for mistakes.
Won’t stick it through failures, stick through what? Failures.
Won’t stick it out through failures. Expect this right? Something’s gonna happen. I want instant results. I did that P90X, I tried it for nine days, it doesn’t work. No seriously, I thought it was P7X, wasn’t it P7? P90. What’d 90 mean? I don’t know, seven. P9, no P9X.
Looking for the next magic pill. Can I eat cake and take a pill?
What if you got their program?
But definitely try it. Actually we do, you have to go to the back. We have the special pill. Just won’t stay the course. I just won’t stay the course.
This is what they’ll say. “Oh, this is what Todd said, well meaning.” He said, “You’re crazy to spend so much on training and coaching.” That’s what he said. What are these numbers, it’s crazy. So cross out spend and put invest. So that’s about a mind set. I don’t spend money. I invest money myself. I’d rather invest money. I’m a better return than the stock market. I’m a better return than Moody’s, I’m a better return than mutual funds. I am a better return investing in me than I am anywhere else. How many believe that to be true? How many invest like that? As if that’s true.
Can’t afford it. Oh, you can’t afford, oh I don’t have the time, no, I don’t have the time, nope. You should just figure it out yourself. That’s great advice. I’ll just figure this out myself. Or how about, just keep doing what you’ve been doing, just do it better. That’s the same ceiling, you can’t get through it.
Oh you haven’t used what you have now. Oh no, I wouldn’t do that. You went to that training before. I had a lady that worked for me and she said that. “You have training stuff you’ve gotten still in a box, you haven’t used it. You have stuff that shrink wrapped. You haven’t even opened it.” I said, “It’s irrelevant. I don’t need everyone to work. I just don’t need every training to work, I just don’t.” Why? ‘Cause I get levers out of a few, all I need’s one or two. Think about it. The professional baseball player hits one out of three. I don’t need ’em all to work.
Oh just spend your time working harder. Put your nose on the grindstone Scotty. Or how about I tried that before and it didn’t work. Or others have tried that before and it didn’t work. Others have tried that before and it didn’t work.
So I want to know, who are they? Who are “They” that we’re worried about? Who are “They” that we’re worried about. Now keep in mind, here is what I’ve seen with every successful person. They are going this way and successful people are going that way. Always moving against the crowd. Always moving. They’re gonna say, “What are you doing?”
